Jewelry making Master Program
Contrary to popular belief the best and fastest way to become a good Jeweler is not learned from a professor in a School.
The best way to learn this intricate art has always been working with a master Jeweler who is experienced.
You should be learning by actually observing and participating in this process.
As a rule, a student can reach about 80% proficiency of their Master so it’s in your interest to find the best Master Jeweler you can possibly work with.
Simply going to a school and trying to Learn this art is actually backwards thinking because you will actually be learning from a from a teacher or from a professor who is not making their living making jewelry but from Teaching. Keep in mind that quite often they know very little about jewelry-making business.
When you finish the program, you’ll learn that this experience and knowledge is not applicable in the field so you are basically going to be starting from scratch because a lot of the things that you learned at school were actually incorrect or outdated and no longer apply. So, you’ll find out the hard way that companies don’t want to hire you with this knowledge and you can’t be self sufficient with this knowledge to go out on your own. You will need to relearn everything and it’s actually easier for me to take on a student that had no prior training of making jewelry.
Taking students with zero experience and teaching them is actually saving me time because I don’t have make a person unlearn wrong information and overwrite the correct information on top of that. Think of boxing lessons if you found a boxing gym that is really cheap say $75 per month what you’ll get is a trainer with very limited experience and he or she will teach you how to incorrectly jab or hook for months until it becomes your habit and a part of your technique. Later when you find a really good trainer and have the money to pay him for training, he will first address your incorrect technique and it will take him twice the time to teach you the correct way to jab or hook simply because you already learned the incorrect technique. So, in the end you’ll have to pay twice or three times as much to learn the proper jab and hook technique simply because it takes a while to unlearn the wrong technique and relearn the correct technique.
So, for those of you who are interested in getting into this field something I suggest to you find an excellent Jeweler that is willing to spare their time and take you on as a student or apprentice. Once you find a jeweler that Jeweler you can begin your journey in learning this Fine Art and do it in a faster and frankly more effective way.
So first you’ll begin with wax on wax off and with time progress into learning more difficult tasks and techniques that will make you a great Jeweler.
We can speed this process up a little bit by cutting through all of the unnecessary knowledge if you want to be specialized in a certain facet of the jewelry making instead of the whole scope like for example Diamond Setting, Jewelry Design, CAD design, Bench work or Jewelry Prototyping Service.
